Kersten Vela 13 SA Vacuum Sweeper/Collector Leaf, litter and debris sweeper/collector

FAQs about Vacuum/Sweeper Collectors, Leaf Sweepers, Litter Sweepers.

Q1) "The material we collect has been on the ground for a while and has stuck to the surface and our machine won't pick it up"
Q2) "The collection bag on our sweeper is not big enough and when you fill it with wet material it drags on the ground because it is carried solely on the handlebars. It even makes the machine tip backwards"
Q3) "We find in wet conditions our machine loses most of its suction so we can't use it"
Q4) "We can't use our existing machine whilst we are open for business because it is too noisy"
Q5) "The drive speed of our machine is either too fast or too slow, this makes it awkward to use"
Q6) "We very often find the engine difficult to start"
Q7) "We have to sweep the gutters and kerbs by hand because our vacuum machine can't get in to them properly with our vacuum sweeper"
Q8) "Our machine is difficult to get up and down kerbs because the wheels are so small"
Q9) "We can't use our machine on the grass when it is wet because the narrow wheels make ruts in the surface"
Q10) "We can't use our machine during the summer because it is too dusty"
Q11) "We only use our machine for a short time because it makes our hands tingle from the vibration"
Q12) "We wish we had a sweeper we could ride on"
Q13) "Our sweeper is so complicated with lots of cables linkages and even electronics; we have to call out a specialist engineer to maintain it"

Q1) "The material we collect has been on the ground for a while and has stuck to the surface and our machine won't pick it up"
The Kersten Vela has a 75cm vacuuming width. The front reception nozzle is simply adjustable up and down to suit the conditions. A rubber flap along the rear edge of the nozzle stays in contact with the ground and focuses the massive suction force to the front and down on the surface. If you try to collect smaller amounts of stuck down material then the front nozzle may be set closer to the surface. When collecting larger volumes of material the nozzle is set higher to accommodate the material entering the nozzle. The side gully brusheswill physically sweep any stuck down material in to the vacuum stream.

Q2) "The collection bag on our sweeper is not big enough and when you fill it with wet material it drags on the ground because it is carried solely on the handlebars. It even makes the machine tip backwards"
The 350 litre collection bag on the Kersten Vela sweeper rides on a trailing platform at the rear of the machine. As the bag fills up, the full weight is supported with out affecting the operation or manoeuvrability of the machine. The steel impeller partially shreds the material passing through it and the high output pressure further compacts the material in to the bag.

Q3) "We find in wet conditions our machine loses most of its suction so we can't use it"
The Kersten Vela has a heavy duty nylon filter bag which may be used in wet conditions because the gaps between the nylon strands are large enough to allow the water and air through and of course don't retain the moisture in the same way that some felt collectors do.

Q4) "We can't use our existing machine whilst we are open for business because it is too noisy"
Kersten have gone to great lengths reduce noise levels from a machines carrying out vacuuming operations. The Kersten Vela sweeper features a steel lined plastic impeller housing and plastic front hood which greatly reduce the resonance created by the increased air velocity. The type of plastic used is similar that found in car bumpers. The generous power is provided by a 13hp Honda, 4 stroke, overhead valve, petrol engine running comfortably within its limits. In many applications the machine can operate effectively at reduced engine revs. Normal operating noise levels can be less that 84db.

Q5) "The drive speed of our machine is either too fast or too slow, this makes it awkward to use"
The Kersten Vela uses Kersten's own hydraulic transmission system featuring an infinitely variable speed control, in forwards and reverse directions, to allow the operator to achieve the correct working rate for a specific application and adjust it on the move as required.

Q6) "We very often find the engine difficult to start"
Kersten only use premium parts in the manufacture of their products including engines from Honda.

Q7) "We have to sweep the gutters and kerbs by hand because our vacuum machine can't get in to them properly with our vacuum sweeper"
One of the outstanding features of the Kersten Vela is the optional hydraulic driven gullybrushes that may be fitted on the left and/ or right hand side of the machine. The speed of these brushes may be adjusted to suit the forward progress of the machine or the specific applications. The brushes are adjustable for height and may be folded away when not required. There are 3 different styles of replacement gullybrush available Polythene, Poly/wire mix and Wire only.

Q8) "Our machine is difficult to get up and down kerbs because the wheels are so small"
The Kersten Vela features large diameter (40cm) turf tyres which are able, together with the powerful hydraulic transmission system, to climb/ride over irregular surfaces.

Q9) "We can't use our machine on the grass when it is wet because the narrow wheels make ruts in the surface"
The floatation turf tyres on the Kersten Vela, together with the wide caster wheels, supports the weight of the vacuum machine in the soft grass conditions typically found in the autumn clean-up period. The Kersten Vela only weighs 125kg.

Q10) "We can't use our machine during the summer because it is too dusty"
A course nylon bag for autumn leaf and litter collection is fitted as standard on the Kersten Vela Vacuum Sweeper. This bag allows the maximum amount of air through the machine to produce peak operating performance in damp conditions. In dry conditions the filter action of the standard bag also allows dust particles to escape. Kersten have therefore developed special lining bags that can be placed inside the standard bag. The gaps between the fibre strands on these dust bags are much smaller and filter out the dust from the air as it passes through producing a virtually dustless operation in the driest conditions.

Q11) "We only use our machine for a short time because it makes our hands tingle from the vibration"
Kersten take Hand-arm-vibration very seriously and are constantly innovating to achieve the lowest vibration levels possible for this type of machine.

Q12) "We wish we had a sweeper we could ride on"
The Kersten Vela is available with an optional trailing sulky seat which may be detached easily with just one pin. The Vela has a transport speed of 5 kilometres/hour.

Q13) "Our sweeper is so complicated with lots of cables linkages and even electronics; we have to call out a specialist engineer to maintain it"
The Kersten Vela has been designed to be as low maintenance as possible. It uses a rugged Honda petrol engine power unit and a sealed hydraulic system for transmission. These are no more complicate than a lawn mower to maintain. The whole machine can be pressure washed as it has powder coating paint finishes on metal work, plastic impeller housings and a nylon collection bag. A competent operator could carry out all routine maintenance and a local grounds caremachinery centre can provide annual servicing.

Q14) "Our last vacuum sweeper only lasted 2 years"
Kersten machines are designed and manufactured in Germany to provide many years of commercial operation. Spare parts are all easily obtained in the UK together with support and advice.

Q14) "Why does moss keep coming back after I have sprayed moss killer?"
Moss killer is effective in certain conditions. To understand when it will be most effective you must appreciate why it grows in the first place.
Moss is not a fungus; it is a very primitive plant that has survived from the ancient past before today's modern plants developed. Since Moss is from a time in earth's history where everything was trying to kill something else, Moss is very efficient at crowding out and killing modern plants like grass. It largely thrives in dampness and shade.
There are many methods for control and removal, the simplest and most effective being to change the conditions that are conducive to iits growth - i.e. remove its food source which are organic matter and moisture. This may be achieved by sweeping the surface with stiff brush and removing any build up that is organic material and contains moisture. By keeping a surface swept the ability for moss to become established is virtually nil.
